How much does wedding hair and makeup cost in the GTA?

The question, from a real bride in a Toronto wedding group: "How much does it usually cost for HMUA these days?" Twelve comments later, we have one of the clearest pictures of GTA wedding beauty pricing you will find anywhere. Here are the real numbers.

The range, from real quotes

  • $70 for makeup alone, $120 for hair and makeup together, from a newer artist building clientele.
  • $150-$160 for the bride, lashes and a mini touch-up kit included, from a professional makeup artist.
  • $150 for the bride, $120 per bridesmaid, plus a travel fee.
  • $190-$260 for hair and makeup in the Burlington, Hamilton, and Oakville area.
  • $220-$280 for hair and makeup, travel included, the most commonly quoted band.
  • $450 for one bride, because the artist travelled to a golf course in Caledon.
  • $2,200 for seven people, hair and makeup, which works out to about $314 each.

Same service, $70 to $450. The price is not random. Here is what moves it.

What drives the price

  • Experience. A newer artist charging $120 and a veteran charging $280 are selling different things: speed, consistency, and the calm that comes from having done this hundreds of times. As one commenter put it, more often than not, you get what you pay for.
  • Travel. The $450 quote was not a $450 face. It was a normal face plus a long drive to Caledon. Artists either bundle travel into the price or charge it separately. Ask which.
  • Party size. Bridesmaids usually cost less per person than the bride, and bigger parties sometimes unlock package pricing. But seven faces is also seven time slots, so book early.
  • What is bundled. Lashes, touch-up kits, hair extensions, airbrush vs traditional: the $150-$160 quote that includes lashes and a touch-up kit may be better value than a cheaper quote that charges for each add-on.
  • Trials. Most artists offer a trial run before the wedding, usually booked and priced separately. It is some of the cheapest insurance in your whole wedding budget. Most brides who skip it wish they had not. (Ask any bride who met her lash extensions for the first time the day before.)

How to choose

Do not shop on price alone. A $120 artist with a portfolio full of faces you love beats a $280 artist whose style is not yours. Look at full faces in natural light, not just the most flattering angles. Ask how many weddings they do a year, how long they need per person on the day, and what happens if they are sick. Then book the trial, and pay attention to how your skin feels at hour eight, not hour one.

Budget realistically: based on what brides reported in the thread this came from, $200-$300 for the bride's hair and makeup with an experienced GTA artist is a common middle range. Below that you are often hiring someone newer. Above that you are often paying for reputation, travel, or both. Your quotes may differ, so collect three before deciding.
